Become a Domain Squatter

February 11th, 2011 | No Comments | Posted in Build an Online Business

If you want to earn money online without doing too much and you don’t mind if it is done in a way that is ethically a little bit of a gray area then domain squatting could be a good choice for you.

Some highly sought after domain names have sold for millions of dollars, and while you can’t expect that kind of return on the vast majority of domains, it is still a highly profitable way of making money if you do it right.

What this basically involves is you taking on a domain name that you know someone else wants, with the idea of selling it to that person at a high price. There are four main ways you can go about this:

  1. Get hold of the domain name when the owner fails to re-register it. This is when, for whatever reason, the previous owner of the domain hasn’t re-registered it once the original deal ran out. There are a number of reasons for this but if it is was a popular or important site then it is a safe bet they either they or someone else will want to buy it off you at some point in the future.
  2. Take advantage of a bankruptcy. If is a company has gone bust then there has to be a good chance that they will either sort things out and look to buy back their domain name or that a rival will buy them out and want to carry on with the same brand name. The end result is the same, as you get to sell on the domain at a nice profit.
  3. Move in while the owner of the domain decides whether to renew. Sometimes people have every intention of renewing their domain but let it lapse because they don’t have the cash to hand, or because they forget about it, or for any other reason. This is when a domain squatter, who is sharp and alert, nips in and registers themselves on it first.
  4. Get in there first. You need to be sharp and creative to make money this way, as what you need to do is find a domain name that isn’t currently taken but that has the potential to become highly sought after in the future.
