A proxy server is an Internet server that lets you surf online while your PC is “hidden” from view. These are popular for a number of different reasons.

Firstly, your computer is more securely protected from hackers. Another reason why people sometimes use proxy servers is to gain access to sites that are blocked from their work or college computer. You can also use this method to hide your online activity from other users of the PC.

As they are becoming increasingly popular tools, it is turning into a clever idea for making money from home, and here is how to do it:

1. You need to set up the proxy server. This is the trickiest part for non-technical experts, but it isn’t really that difficult. You need to buy a domain name and then pick a proxy hosting package from companies who specialize in these things. There is plenty on information online on how to set it up, but if you aren’t comfortable with this then hire a techie freelancer from sites like Elance or oDesk.
2. Following this, you need to get people to use your server. Online ads, social networking comments, blog comments and all the usual online marketing tips are valid here. If you don’t have the time or inclination to do this yourself, then you can again choose a freelancer to do it for you pretty inexpensively.
3. At the last bit you need to decide is how you are going to make money from the business. There are two main methods here. You could either charge a small fee from the surfers who use your proxy server or live of advertising revenue from your site. Either option is valid but you will probably get a lot more traffic if you allow users to access it for free. Advertising income tends to be pretty small, so you need a fair number of visitors for it to mount up to a good sum. Alternatively you could link your site to an affiliate program, meaning that you get commission on the sales that you have passed to them.
