Netflix Shuts Down Its Facebook Component
Netflix has sunsetted it’s the Facebook component on its site. The Facebook component, which was added some two years ago, allowed users to share their movie choices and reviews with their friends. According to Tim Willerer, the Director of Product Management, very few members of Netflix had signed up for the feature. The feature was being shut down to allow for the testing of new concepts that would lead to programs that were more appealing to its members. It seems that the company has some homework to do. Some of the comments left by users in a response to the blog post indicate dissatisfaction of the linking of Netflix and Facebook in the first place. Before the Facebook idea came along the site had its own “friends community” that was in-site. This was done away with in favor of the Facebook component. The other complaint from users was the fact that there was no much choice on what could or could not appear on their Facebook profiles. Each and every update would directly link to a user’s Facebook stream. The Social Media has worked greatly for many companies. One thing though that someone needs to keep in mind if they are intending to use it to make their products more appealing and popular is that it takes effort and time to make it work.
