This past Christmas season was a merry one for OpenFeint, a mobile gaming platform. The company reported that on Christmas Day alone, it got over 450,000 new users. This figure represents a 184 percent rise over its day to day average. The Christmas Day of 2010 also goes down in record as OpenFeint’s largest day. The four days around Christmas saw the network add close to 1.4 million new users. It is not unusual for that mobile application downloads to see a spike during the Christmas season. This most likely happens as people try out their new gadgets and also because they have some extra time to engage their phones. The networks users also downloaded over 5 million games in the four days. The devices that recorded the highest percentage growth in downloads was iOS whose downloads went up by 187 percent. Downloads on Android went up by 73 percent. OpenFeint also added 88 percent new users by the end of 2010 compared to the same period the previous year. The growth can be attributed to OpenFeint launching on the iPad, iPhone and on Android. The cross platform approach is setting OpenFeint apart. The company is still looking into expanding on to other platforms and recently got an $8 million investment from a Chinese gaming company,The9, and Intel Capital.
