Make Money with Domain Parking

September 29th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Build an Online Business, Featured

What is Domain Parking?

Domain parking is a concept where you use a registered domain and generate income by pointing the domain to a parking program. Money (usually in the form of commissions) is generated when a person visits your domain by various methods and clicks on an advertisement served by the parking program. A domain parking program will generate a page for the domain you registered and it will contain nothing but advertisements; each of which will earn you money if clicked.

Once an internet user visits your domain and an Ad is clicked, the parking page provider will receive money, and you will also receive money. Typically the parking program will allow you to customize the page your domain is pointed to and will serve advertisements related to either words in your domain or keywords you add. This way you offer a better user experience and earn more money. At one time parking page programs were very simple and had no customization options. Now these programs can offer wide range of templates, layouts, colors, structures and the ads can change depending on search habits, domain keywords, and many other factors.

How does making money work with Domain Parking?

Making money with parked domains is an easy process but not an easy thing to actually accomplish. The mechanics of the system itself are extremely easy; you just register or acquire a domain and point it to a parking program account online and from there the domain will generate money infinitely as long as you keep the domain registered. At the end of the month earnings are calculated automatically and you are sent payments via check or paypal. This makes cash from parking pages one of the best passive income streams you can have.

Level of Difficulty

The most difficult aspect is finding a domain that will generate money continuously using a parking program. Maybe this would have been easier back in the year range of 99-2004 when the majority of all internet users did not understand anything about the web. Now, many of the once used methods and tricks are known, and the acquisition of domains is no longer just a register fee.  All of this will be explained so keep reading on what methods are used to find a good domain for parking.

Ways to Acquire Domains
:

Cyber Squatting – This is probably the most risky but the easiest method. What is involved is basically finding and registering a domain that is exactly, similar, or close enough to a major brand to where you receive traffic from accidental type-ins. This can be also called typosquatting.  There are tools available that can take a popular domain and generate specific known typo versions such using the Skip letter, Double letters, Reverse letters, Skip spaces, Missed key, or Inserted key. I highly recommend you avoid cyber squatting / typo squatting because it is not a matter of IF you will be sued but WHEN you will be sued.

Domain Tasting – This method is a bit more complex and requires quite a bit of up front capital not to mention it is frowned upon. It was a method used back some time ago that may or may not be viable anymore because of Google indirectly ending the money source for this activity.  What is involved here is signing up with a registrar like Pool.com that offers a tasting service.  You will purchase the rights to lease an available domain for a short space of time (usually like 2-3 days). The price is something to the effect of .25 per domain.  So you can grab massive quantities of domains for a short time and at a cost well below the register fee of around $9.  If you purchase in large enough quantities it will be worthwhile because 80% of the domains you’re tasting will not yield any revenue while the 20% will make money above the registration fee. You keep those domains.  How do you know which domains to register? Subscribing to expired domain lists and tools is your best option.  Google may have put a stop to this by expanding the amount of time a domain will show revenue when it is “new” to their system.  Is Google the only system parked domain providers use? Yes, they seem to be the money source of all reputable parking systems for now.

Domain Typos – This is basically the same method as cybersquatting.  The real difference here is you can get typos of generic keywords like ‘interent’ or ‘shopping’. This way there is lower risk of someone having trademarks on such generic terms. People mistype addresses all the time and wind up on parking pages where there are nothing but advertisements to click on. As mentioned before these methods are well known and many of the profitable typo domains have been snatched up!

Probably the best typo tool I have found on the internet is this one

Keyword Domains – This is a good idea for many reasons. If you can purchase a two word English dictionary domain that makes sense, you will have a gold nugget in your pocket.  There are plenty around but they are going fast as people are realizing that internet users will often times type in those words with .com or search engines will eventually pick up the domain and even list the parked page for those keywords!  Not to mention these domains are good for businesses who want to expand their online presence.  They may offer you a cash buy out many times over what you paid for the domain.

To find keyword domains I recommend you use the following tools to locate a popular keywords.

Expired Domains with Traffic – This is probably the best all time method for finding an excellent domain that will earn you a nice passive income.  I have seen domains that earn thousands per month from parking pages that require zero work or maintenance.  The basic goal is to find a domain that was once owned by someone else that has expired.  In the past, expired domain names just went up for grabs to anyone who wanted to register the name after they expired. Not anymore. There is a long process involved which includes an auction after the domain name expires.  Most all decent domain names that have traffic will go through an auction process and those with traffic will also have bidders.  This will drive up the cost of purchasing any decent domain.

Here are some auction sites that have a good amount of expired domain listings and traffic numbers.

Expired Domains with Links – Expired domains with links are another good angle to use when looking for domains to monetize for domain parking.  In this aspect you’re going to need to troll through all types of expired domain name lists and use services to find the names with the most or most relevant amount of links.  There is an entire domain sub culture that is involved in determining link worth.  Important factors are how many links exist, anchor text, quality of sites linking, domain extension of incoming link, page rank, and more.  To help you narrow down the search, the absolute best expired domain link finding service I have found is the following:

Also you may be interested to know how to manually look at links pointing to a certain domain. Yahoo’s site explorer is currently the best tool for the job.  The reason is because it displays the most accurate representation of links.

What are the skills required for Domain Parking?

There are a tiny bit of skills involved for the mechanics of domain parking.  There are considerably more skills necessary for choosing a domain that will be profitable. You can master the mechanics in less than a day. The basic knowledge you will need is registering a domain and setting up an account at a domain page parking program.  You will also need to know how to manage the DNS of a domain which sounds complicated, but I assure you, it is not.  The most important aspect or skill you will need comes from judging the value of a domain before the purchase so you do not lose money. Finally to get the most out of the traffic your domain receives you will need to test, test, test different formats for your parking page.
