The “Daily” A Tablet Only Newspaper To Launch Soon

January 28th, 2011 | No Comments | Posted in News

Come February 2, 2011 the Apple iPad will start hosting a newspaper meant for tablets only from News Corp. The newspaper called the Daily will be selling for 99 cents a week. Originally the newspaper was supposed to have been unveiled on January 19 but technical glitches necessitated the postponing of the launch, according to Reuters. The launch will take place in New York and the News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch and Eddy Cue the Vice President of Internet Services at Apple will lead the event. News about the tablet-only newspaper were made public last year in November when Murdoch gave details about the publication during an interview with The Australian Financial Review. He said that the publication would only employ journalists and around eight to ten technicians.  He also added that it would take around 800,000 readers to make the Daily economically viable. This number is quite achievable taking into consideration the raising popularity of the iPad. At the same time tablet makers and e-reader manufacturers have endeavored to integrate periodicals access capabilities in their products. Periodicals can realize a stream of steady revenue from tablet based subscriptions. A Survey conducted by the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute found that 84.4 % of the participants (1600) used their iPads to follow breaking news. With these numbers the success of the Daily seems eminent.
